Maybe you’ve heard of the movie Rock of Ages, that came out in 2012. Or perhaps you’ve heard of the Broadway play Rock of Ages that came before that movie. Recently I was involved in a play for ‘middle schoolers’, and that was, you guessed it, Rock of Ages. If you have ever seen the movie, you probably noticed two things.
- There are a few quite famous people in that movie.
In the movie, some of the actors/actresses include: Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, and Mary J. Blige.
- It is not appropriate for people my age to do as a play.
That’s why, even though a bunch of us aren’t in middle school, and even though we aren’t doing this with a school program, that we did this middle schooler version.
A bunch of the characters had to be changed and adapted to form this play, so that there were more parts. Before there were about 6 main parts and people didn’t really matter if they weren’t one of those parts. A bunch of this play had to be changed overall to be appropriate, so our play had the same basic plot, but it was a little different.
I played a character that didn’t exist in the movie, and she had some of my favorite 80’s songs. We’re Not Gonna Take It and We Built This City were a few.
We spent two weeks, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, and in that time, we memorized the whole play, and blocked it. Every year we do a play in this style, and it’s always a lot of fun. I’m so glad that every year I get to have this experience, and I made lots of memories and had a great time.
